The province of Groningen is located in the northern Netherlands and is bordered by the provinces of Friesland, Drenthe, and Overijssel. The capital city of Groningen is also the largest city in the province. Groningen was originally mostly inhabited by Frisians, but now Nedersaksische dialects are spoken throughout the province. In the villages of De Wilp, Opende, Kornhorn, and Marum in the Westerkwartier, however, some residents still speak Frisian. Groningen is the fourth-largest province in the Netherlands, with a population density of 251 people per square kilometer.
